Fighting Silence by Aly Martinez

Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it's the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I've always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine.  I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn't a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.
You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.
 They both happened anyway.
Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting for my career.
Fighting the impending silence.

Fighting for her.
Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that's the sound I'll miss the most.

Fighting Silence turned out to be a great read. I only briefly grazed the synopsis, but when I jumped into this 'best-friends to lovers' read I was quite surprised how it sucked me in.  Till Page and Eliza Reynolds have been best friends since the age of 13, and at times it seems like they only have each other.  Till Page is a fighter.  He has to take care of his little brothers and fights daily to keep his family together.  Eliza Reynolds has a somewhat better home life than Till, but she's largely ignored by her parents.  These two forge a friendship and bond that spans many years.  The journey isn't easy. They not only fight each other for the feelings and love that has developed, but also deal with the crap lives and families that they have each been born into.  When they are with one another, they live in their own fantasy world, but reality always rears it's ugly head.

I loved the friendship and unity between Till and Eliza. The story showcases this sweet friendship that turns into a deep love through adulthood. But with all love there are many obstacles.  Eliza is honest about her feelings with Till. She isn't a pushover and won't allow Till to give her anything less than what she wants and deserves. Unfortunately Till has a lot going on and is hesitant and afraid that following his feelings will only end up in destroying the best thing that he has ever had.

The story took many turns and one in particular truly shocked me! So it definitely kept me on my toes. It's suspenseful, heartwarming and heartfelt. Till and Eliza have to overcome a lot through their adolescence. Not only with each other, but also just life in general. I loved how Till and Eliza's story has a slow buildup.  We get to really know each character and live through their hurts, pains and disappointments.  It makes you cheer them on even more.

This is  fantastic story! Not forget the secondary characters which were all great. Till's brothers were such a pivotal part of the story which I truly enjoyed. I can already tell that this is going to be a series that I will no doubt follow.   Rating: 4 Stars
